When I was little, here in the USA, my Great-Grand-Mother taught me a song...that now I can only remember the first part and
at this point not sure if I pronounce the words correctly. I will write what I know with spelling based on sound (in english).
"Cukoo, Cukoo....How nina cukoo...Ina rina
suon." Any ideas? Anyone?
Thanks!

Hi Gull,
This is a well known finnish folk song:
KUKKUU, KUKKUU
(Words & music trad.)
Kukkuu kukkuu, kaukana kukkuu,
Saimaan rannalla ruikuttaa;
ei ole ruuhta rannalla,
joka minun kultani kannattaa.
Ikävä on aikani, päivät on pitkät,
surutont' en hetkeä muistakaan;
voi, mikä lienee tullutkaan,
kun jo ei kultani kuulukaan!
Toivon riemu ja autuuden aika
suruani harvoin lievittää:
rintani on kuin järven jää -
kukapa sen viimeinkin lämmittää?
Kotka se lenteli taivahan alla,
sorsa se souteli aalloilla;
kultani on Saimaan rannalla,
lähteä ei tohdi tuulelta.
Tuuli on tuima ja ankarat on aallot,
ruuhet on rannalla pienoiset;
ruuhet on rannalla pienoiset,
kultani sormet on hienoiset.
Älä lähde, kultani, aaltojen valtaan,
aallot ne pian sinun peittäisi!
Sitten ei suru mua heittäisi,
ennen kuin multakin peittäisi.
[ October 08, 2006: Message edited by: Ataki ]

Ataki,
I just realized...you also got me the info on Annikki Tahti and the song "Kunningaskobra." I just recieved the CD. Yes....only the one song that has the mideast sound but the rest of the CD is pretty fun. The music is more my Grandmother's speed. It is good also for me as I can pick up on the language. Could you translate the Kunningaskobra song also? I am performing to the song on the 28th of this month and will have pictures up on my web site. I just put a new page up of my solo dances with explainations to the music and costuming.
http://atthecenter.net/atindigo.html
Thank You Again.....
I owe you!
Gull

Unfortunately I couldn´t find any CD that includes this song. Also I´m afraid that translating these lyrics is too much for my english, but I´ll copy here a short description of the lyrics that I found somewhere from the net:
"A young maid is sitting by the water listening to a cuckoo calling far away in the distance. She is waiting for her beloved and is worried in case something has happened to his boat. If he has been swept away by a wave, she vows she will follow him beneath the earth because she cannot live without him."
We have here in the forum a few other guys who have already showed their talent as a translator Smile

I saw this just couple days ago, cause I ain't been so intensive in that Forum than I have been on past years.
Maybe I'll try to translate it, if I got my inspiration back some day Wink
Someone else could do that too.
[ October 24, 2006: Message edited by: Jussi ]

Gull, if you want to see Annikki Tähti perform on a DVD, you should buy Aki Kaurismäki's movie A Man Without A Past. Try amazon.com if you are interested.
And nope, I'm not going to try to translate that cukoo one. Too diffucult at these late hours. But still, I think you look good on those dancing costumes :p

Tomi,
I understand about the translating issue.
I recently rented the movie you mention.
Last night I performed (Belly Dance) to song Kuningaskobra by Annikki last night at a show. I will have pictures up on the site at some point.
Thanks!
